Race riots in Paris suburbs flare for third night
Youths clashed with police overnight in suburbs around Paris, Le Point website and Agence France Presse reported on Wednesday, the latest outbreak of trouble as strict lockdown rules to tackle the coronavirus heighten social tensions and residents vented their anger at allegedly oppressive police treatment towards the largely ethnic minority population in the poorer neighbourhoods.
The catalyst for the clashes, which have been taking place in areas such as Villeneuve-La-Garenne, Nanterre and Clichy, was an incident during which a 30-year old motorcyclist injured in a collision with an unmarked police car during a chase was left with a broken leg.
Police, who have launched an enquiry into the incident, said they had wanted to question the rider who had been seen speeding the wrong way down a street without a helmet.
Social media networks carried images showing gangs of youths setting off fireworks in the direction of police forces, and of cars having been set on fire.
Officials at the Paris police department could not be immediately reached for comment.
Last week in Bziers, in the south of France, it was announced that three police officers were facing criminal charges after a father-of-three died while under arrest for breaching the Coronavirus lockdown.
The officers, who were videoed dragging Mohamed Gabsi, 33, along the ground during a curfew, face charges of "intentional violence by a public official leading to manslaughter" and "non assistance of a person in danger".
Frances banlieues - high-rise housing estates on the outskirts of major cities described by Frances national health director as experiencing an exceptional excess of coronavirus deaths earlier this month - have long been flashpoints of anger over social and economic grievances.
In 2005, unrest lasted three weeks after two youths died fleeing police in a northern Paris suburb
