Dear Members,

If you have missed our idiosyncratic newsletter, it is because we wished the dust to settle a little after the local and European elections where emotions have been riding high. And though we should strive to be magnanimous at the fall of an enemy, many of us will quietly celebrate the departure of Theresa May; for she was the impediment to the clean Brexit we voted for nearly three years ago, a fact that her intellect still has trouble to reconcile.

The results of these recent elections shall serve notice that the People will not tolerate parliamentary abuse any longer. Time is short if the Tory Party is to survive, no more room for more mistakes. A hardline Brexiteer delivering a no-deal WTO outcome by or before the end of October is their only route to salvation; anything less is political suicide. Thus, to ram the message home, the electorate, in their infinite wisdom, have lent their votes elsewhere to force such a change of direction.

Meanwhile, Robin Tilbrook’s case on behalf of English Democrats goes from strength to strength, indeed, would it not be so typically English and delightfully idiosyncratic if the Court were to find we had left the EU on 29th March after all. The case is due to be heard around the time of President Trump’s visit in June. What better way to greet our great ally than to say we have left the EU and embrace a free trade deal with America, a country which helped us vanquish the Germans in two world wars?

If France and Germany want their federal Europe, let us be disinterested observers, far too much British blood has been spilt in the quest for peace. As for the Euro, the currency has a short lease of life left to it, for Germany will soon balk at bailing out the Italians on Target 2 financing. Let us have nothing more to do with their problems. We have done more than enough historically. As Churchill said:-

“We are with Europe, but not of it. We are linked but not combined. We are interested and associated but not absorbed. If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always choose the open sea.”

In close association with Democrats & Veterans, we are in the long and arduous process of building a political party fit for the 21st century- to replace the current broken system with direct democracy. Stay tuned.

Sir William Jaffray.
Chairman of Democracy17.4 membership association.
