Unrestricted UK arrivals major contributor to spread shock report
A NEW study has brought into question the Government's policy on international arrivals at the beginning of the pandemic, as the report found the spread of coronavirus is "highly correlated" with the extent of air travel.

The study by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) found the spread of coronavirus is "highly correlated" with the extent of air travel. The report used the UK as an example of where a large number of domestic and international flights "facilitated contagion". The findings could lead to further criticism of Boris Johnson's handling of the pandemic, as the Government opted against restricting flights or quarantining new arrivals from the outset.

The study said: "The flow of air passengers across and within country borders has been a major contributor to the spread of the virus."

Other cities, including Paris, Milan and New York were also singled out as sites that could have contributed to the spread of the virus.

Serge Stroobants, an IEP director, told the PA news agency: "The countries most impacted are countries that are really participating in global trade in the globalised world and the interconnected world.

"These are countries in which you will find a large airport hub, giving the potential to people to travel from one country to the other.

"That's why, for example, the region of Milan in Italy, Paris, Brussels, Frankfurt, London and New York, those big international hubs created more exchanges and more potential for the virus to grow."

The UK Government's policy on air travel has been heavily criticised, especially as ministers introduced a new role on Monday requiring international arrivals to quarantine for 14-days.

Critics argue the measure was introduced too late and say passengers should have been forced to quarantine from the outset.

The travel industry also fears the move could cripple its business, and deter tourists from visiting Britain.

When there was still a small number of coronavirus cases in the UK, there were calls for restrictions on flights from destinations deemed at high risk of the virus, such as Italy, China and the US.

But at the time the Government insisted there was no evidence that closing borders would be an effective measure.

IT STANDS OUT VERY CLEARLY THAT THIS GOVERNMENT BY NOT SHUTTING DOWN AIR TRAVEL HAVE KILLED OVER 40.000 BRITISH CITIZENS BY THEIR NEGLECT AT THE SAME TIME GIVING THEMSELVES A PAY RISE PLUS 10K AND ANOTHER 25K TO HIDE A WAY FROM THE MESS THEY WERE AND STILL ARE MAKING -----------HEADS SHOULD ROLL OVER THIS
