The couple who won £161 million on the EuroMillions lottery are to fund SNP leader Alex Salmond’s campaign for Scottish independence.
Colin and Chris Weir – who won the largest-ever EuroMillions jackpot in July – have pledged a ‘seven-figure donation’ to the campaign.
Mr Weir, 64, is a lifelong supporter of the SNP and stood as the party’s candidate in Ayr at the 1987 General Election – coming fourth in the poll.
Pledge: Winners Colin and Chris Weir are making a huge donation to the SNP
The former TV cameraman also worked with Mr Salmond in a voluntary role on party political broadcasts in the Eighties and was inspired to make his donation after Scotland’s First Minister wrote to congratulate him on his win.
Mr Salmond wrote: ‘When I heard the fantastic news that a Scot had landed the EuroMillions jackpot, I did wonder if this was the same Colin Weir who helped produce SNP party political broadcasts for a young party publicity vice-convener all those years ago.’
He signed off: ‘Yours for Scotland, Alex.’ Since then, Mr Weir and Mr Salmond have met up and the winner has spoken to other senior party figures.
Letter: The SNP leader Alex Salmond wrote to congratulate Mr Weir on the win
Last night, a party source said: ‘There is no doubt Colin is committed to the cause of independence and he even has a life membership with the SNP.
‘Since he received a congratulatory letter from the First Minister, they have met each other and there have been conversations with other senior party figures.
‘Colin is committed to giving a substantial seven-figure donation towards the referendum campaign in the run-up to the vote in the second half of the Parliament – he wants to help the party make a difference.’
The donation from Mr and Mrs Weir, from Largs, Ayrshire, is expected to be the SNP’s largest-ever cash injection.
It means the SNP will easily be able to outspend those in favour of the union in the proposed independence referendum in 2014.
Last night, when asked about his donation, Mr Weir simply smiled and politely said: ‘No comment.’
As far as I am concerned Scotland can go totally independent right now and it will save the rest of the UK a fortune.
How about building Hadrians wall again ?
