Romanian gangs 180 thefts from commuters helped build five homes

A Romanian family was being sentenced today for stealing mobile phones and cash in 180 attacks on sleeping and drunk rail commuters.

The five-strong gang of professional pickpockets hopped on and off late-night trains between Charing Cross and Gravesend, where they were based.

They targeted passengers who were dozing, listening to music or too drunk or tired to notice their valuables were being taken. After sweeping the train, the thieves would quickly move on.

The gang carried out at least 180 thefts, bringing in at least 60,000, but detectives believe the true value of their haul was many times higher.

They discovered that the thieves, who arrived in Britain as asylum seekers and claimed disability and child benefit, were sending home thousands of pounds every month from their criminal profits.

They have a string of properties around their home town of Huedin in Transylvania, where they have built five huge homes, including a 16-bedroom villa, and own a fleet of expensive cars.

The gang was traced after British Transport Police mounted an undercover operation and viewed more than 50 days of CCTV film.

In January last year one plainclothes officer spotted one of them sitting next to a sleeping woman, despite the carriage being virtually empty, and moving towards her open handbag.

Two men were arrested after a search of two homes in Gravesend uncovered a mass of mobile phones, SIMs and stolen valuables.

At Blackfriars crown court, Romulus Rostas, 18, brother Marin, 25, cousin Cornell, 22, and a 17-year-old, who cannot be named because of his age, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal. They made the admission on the fifth day of their trial in February.

Another brother, Robert Rostas, 23, admitted conspiracy to steal at a previous hearing.

The gang are believed to be part of a far wider network operating across Europe.

Before todays sentencing, Detective Sergeant Paddy Kerr, who oversaw the investigation, said: It is a stark reminder to those travelling on trains to secure their personal belongings to avoid becoming a victim of this type of parasitic behaviour.

The question here is whether they will be forced to sell their homes in Romania or not, if not NO Romanians should be allowed into this country and those here should be repatriated.
This is another of the governments failed ideas, NO ASYLUM SEEKERS AT ALL SHOULD BE ALLOWED INTO OUR COUNTRY.

How the hell can "Romanians" be asylum seekers, Romania is an EU country that is democratic and has to abdive by EU human rights legislations, more like these rouges were escaping the Authoraties in Romania, for crimes like theft there.
