TIDE IS TURNING: MORE BRITONS THAN EVER BEFORE BELIEVE EU IS BAD FOR UK

More than half of Britons believe the EU is having a negative impact on Britain's economy
Thursday September 13,2012
By Emily Fox for express.co.uk
MORE Britons than ever before believe EU membership is bad for the country and that it is having a negative effect on the economy, according to a new report.

An annual analysis of transatlantic trends by the America-based German Marshall Fund has revealed that 60 per cent of people in Britain believe EU membership has had a negative effect on the economy.

According to the research, which focuses on the 12 main nations within the EU, including Germany, Italy, Spain and France, anti-EU sentiment in Britain over the past year is visibly on the rise.

The number of British respondents with an unfavourable view of the EU had risen 14 percentage points over the past year to 49 per cent.

The effect of the euro is also seen as a bad thing with 89 per cent believing so.

According to the research, Britons are not alone with their concerns as more than half of the Spanish (57 per cent), the Portuguese (55 per cent), the French (52 per cent), and the Italians (51per cent) believe the euro had been a negative thing for their economies.

Even in strong eurocratic countries like Germany, there was a high dissatisfaction rating as 58 per cent said they were unhappy with the euro.

Britons have become increasingly skeptical of the EU over the past year and have become weary of its intervention.

73 per cent of Britons said the economic crisis had affected them personally while 58 per cent disapproved of the governments handling of economic policies surrounding the EU, a rate close to that of some of Europes most troubled economies.

EU chief Barroso calls for European superstate with own military

The U.K. was one of two European countries where majorities disapproved of their country making a contribution to the European bailout fund - the other being Slovakia.

It was also the country where respondents insisted most strongly on retaining full control over the national budget (79 per cent).

Craig Kennedy President, German Marshall Fund of the United States said: "The decade reflected by our polls has been a tumultuous one for both Europe and the United States, one that has been marred by a marked divide between the two sides of the Atlantic about the U.S. intervention in Iraq, the alliances role in Afghanistan, and the global economic crisis.

The figures follow controversial comments made by President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso who claimed the nations of the EU should undergo further integration.

He claimed that the EU should develop a European superstate with its own military.

Barroso said the EU needs to "move toward a federation of nation states" that involves shared sovereignty, drawing a distinction between that and a "superstate."

"Pooled sovereignty means more power, not less," he argued.

The figures show that Britain now exports more than 50% of its exports OUTSIDE the EU. And that's without taking into account the non-EU exports that are counted as EU exports because thay transit through Antwerp or Rotterdam. Without the EU being allowed to dump its poor on us, we could concentrate on the non-EU economic migrants. So let's start by leaving the EU, sending all the Eastern Europeans (and Irish travellers) back where they came from. It will have to be brutal. But then anti-social behaviour and crime flourishes where these people "live" in Britain. The police or the Army? The Army, I think. Close your eyes. Beat them! Send in tanks! Armoured bulldozers! Armed troops! Cleanse OUR country! If you think the EU is a good idea, give me 10 good reasons, discernible to and beneficial for the ordinary person, in favour of EU membership. Thought not, and while we are cleansing our country lets not forget the followers of that peaceful religion who would like so much to take over our country, who are again at this very moment killing yanks in the name of Allah.

MIGRANTS BLAMED FOR SURGE IN CRIME

Thursday September 13,2012
By Anil Dawar BRITAINS over-stretched police are being swamped by a soaring migrant crimewave, new statistics reveal.

One force alone detained almost 12,000 foreign nationals last year the equivalent of 33 non-British suspects every day.

That was a 53 per cent increase on the 7,716 foreigners that West Midlands Police picked up during the previous 12 months.

Romanians topped the league of overseas suspects held over crimes including murder, sex offences, assaults and theft.

There was also a steep rise in the number of Poles and Lithuanians arrested.

Gerard Batten, UK Independence Party home affairs spokesman, said: These figures show we have no control over the entry of criminals from within Europe because it is against EU legislation to stop them.

There are richer pickings here than in Eastern Europe so criminals will come here. The soaring number of foreigners held by police comes despite a fall in recorded crime across the UK to a 20-year low.

Sensitive statistics on arrests are not routinely released by police. The only other forces to publish recent data are Devon and Cornwall and West Mercia. The South-west region saw a 23 per cent rise in arrests of overseas suspects, from 1,667 in 2009 to 2,058 in 2011.

In West Mercia, 1,991 foreigners were held in the last 12 months 26 per cent up on the 1,559 quizzed during the previous period.

The figures for West Midlands Police, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, come as the force struggles to cope with a record 125million budget cut.

Ukip MEP Mr Batten said: Police are having their budgets cut and at the same time they have to deal with an increase in the number of criminals from abroad. Something has to give.

Birmingham Labour MP, Khalid Mahmood, said: There is a big problem.

People coming straight into the country with no border controls, no checks. Criminals are coming in.

There has been a great song and dance about people from Africa and the sub-continent, but there is no control at all on Eastern Europeans arriving and that is where the problem is.

Ian Edwards, chairman of the West Midlands Police Federation for rank-and-file officers, said: These figures have to represent a worry.

Many foreign nationals will require interpreters and other associated costs to a force already having to make 125million savings by 2015, with further planned savings anticipated in the future.

Some 11,801 foreign suspects were held by the force in the year ended March 2012.

Of these 2,629 were for violent offences, a rise of over 600 from the previous 12 months.

The number detained for sex offences rose from 271 to almost 400. Robbery and burglary arrests more than doubled from 493 to 1,019.

Romanians, whose country joined the EU in 2007, were the largest group of suspected offenders. A total of 1,329 were detained, up 100 per cent. Indians were second with 1,156 (up 41 per cent), followed by 1,023 Poles (up 66 per cent). Lithuanians were in seventh place with 440 (up 87 per cent).

Of all the suspects arrested 2,188 were dealt with in the courts, compared to 1,302 the previous year.

Some 4,433 faced no further action while the rest were given cautions, fines or handed over to the UK Border Agency.

West Midlands deputy chief constable Dave Thompson said yesterday: We serve and police a diverse community, presenting some challenges but great opportunities. We work really closely with colleagues in the Home Offi ce, European and international police forces as well as directly with communities themselves to continue to drive down crime.

Crime is down in the West Midlands. We have seen signifi cant decreases in burglary and robbery. People are safer now than at any time during the last 10 years.
