EVERY household in Britain pays nearly 6,000 a year for our membership of the European Union.

Explosive new estimates by a leading economist reveal Britain is at least 150billion a year worse off as a result of being shackled to Brussels. That is a tenth of our national output.

The calculations by Professor Tim Congdon take account not just of direct payments to the EU but of indirect costs including red tape and diktats that impose extra burdens on business.

There is also waste, fraud and corruption in EU spending, misallocation of resources through market-distorting policies and potential costs should EU institutions collapse.

Professor Congdon includes 100,000 jobs he believes have been lost to UK-born people through the arrival of 700,000 eastern Europeans since 2004 under Labours open-door policy when their countries joined the EU, as well as benefits tourism when foreigners claim UK welfare.

The findings will fuel support for the Daily Express crusade to get us out of the EU.

Professor Congdon, who is economics spokesman for the UK Independence Party, said: This study has established that, from an economic standpoint, the case for withdrawal is overwhelming.

The respected academic, former Government adviser and founder of the International Monetary Research consultancy, who will give more details next week at Ukips annual conference, said the final total of 5,700 per household was far higher than he expected when he began his detailed research. Its absolutely appalling, its horrific, he said.

My conclusion is that we are 10 per cent of GDP, about 150billion a year, worse off because we are a member of the EU instead of being an independent sovereign nation like Norway or Switzerland in our own continent, or like Canada or Australia in the wider English-speaking world.

Leaving the EU would not immediately and automatically make Britain 10 per cent richer, he stressed. But we would be better off fairly quickly by about two per cent of GDP as we stopped contributions to the EU budget, prevented foreigners from tapping into our benefit system, chucked the fines from the European Court of Justice in the bin, and so on.

Over a decade households would benefit from lower food prices, cuts in electricity and water charges, and greater ease of employment.

The removal of the restrictions would lead to the formation of more small and medium-size companies, and the economy would move to a higher growth path. Over time we would make good the 10 per cent output shortfall that can and must be blamed on EU membership.

He said the argument of those who said Britain had to stay in the EU to enjoy free trade was not the last word. The EU had made free trade deals with countries outside Europe so why not with an independent and sovereign Britain too.

Outside the EU, we can put in place the free trade agreement with our European partners which is all most people wanted when we joined the then Common Market in 1973.

Challenging the Government to produce its own cost-benefit analysis of membership, but predicting it would not do so, he concluded: For over 40 years officialdom has lied to the British people about the UKs membership of the EEC and the EU. They must be told the truth.

Robert Oxley, of the TaxPayers Alliance, said: Its time the Government put taxpayers first and stopped running scared of the Europe debate.

The Foreign Office said last night it had begun its own cost-benefit analysis of EU membership but it would not be completed until 2014. It promised: The result will be the most thorough and detailed analysis possible.

From Great Britain being the workshop of the world To becoming the Workhouse of Europe in three generations. The history of calculated social engineering that destroys all that made Britain "Great."
In the forces we had a saying: "Bullshit baffles brains."
In Europe, it is evident that Communist sophistry is replacing common that along with the take-over of the UK by Islam we only have two choices,
FIGHT OF LEAVE.
