PRESIDENT Barack Obamas administration gave Britain a stark warning yesterday against moves to quit the EU.
Philip Gordon, the US assistant secretary for European affairs, said in London that pulling out could hurt the trans-Atlantic special relationship.
He said it was in Americas interests to see a strong British voice in the EU and added: We welcome an outward-looking EU with Britain in it.
The US warning came as Prime Minister David Cameron prepares to come clean at last about his EU referendum plans in a long-anticipated speech expected the week after next.

But he is set to disappoint anti-Brussels campaigners by delaying a referendum until at least 2018, it emerged last night.
And he has told allies that he will campaign to keep the UK within the EU in the run-up to the historic poll.
A source close to the Prime Minister last night dismissed reports of the contents of the speech as speculation. The source said: Wait for the speech.
But Whitehall insiders indicated that Mr Cameron will use the opportunity to announce his plans for a major renegotiation of Britains terms of membership of the EU.
In the Commons yesterday Mr Cameron told MPs: I think it is right that we are involved in the single market, were active players within the European Union.
But there are changes we would like in our relationship that would be good for Britain and good for Europe.
According to a report in todays Spectator magazine, Mr Camerons speech will commit Britain to staying within the EU single market but scrap powers not covered by single-market legislation such as the Working Time Directive, which limits working hours for employees.
Sources told the magazine that Mr Cameron was confident of victory in a campaign to keep Britain in the EU because the prospect of an exit would panic business.
Euro-sceptic critics were unenthusiastic. Tory MP Peter Bone said: If there is another coalition after the next election there is the danger this referendum pledge could be abandoned.
I suppose we are all gong to kowtow to the mighty bullshit coming from the USA, and as our clown prime minister is not going to give us a say in whether we want ot leave the EU that only leaves two scenarios, vote them out or a full scale rebellion, sorry there is a third, just do as your told.
I know which one it will be, do you. |
