Statins in new health alert: Daily pill can cause kidney damage
A WONDERDRUG taken daily by millions of Britons to control cholesterol could dramatically increase the risk of kidney damage, researchers warn.

High doses of statins, prescribed to prevent heart disease and stroke, are linked to higher rates of acute kidney injury, they say.

The risk is highest in the first 120 days of treatment and stays raised for at least two years after patients start taking the pills. Leading doctors are now warning that the drugs should only be prescribed at a low dose where possible.

Author of the Canadian report, Professor Colin Dormuth, said: In some cases, patients may be exposed to unnecessary risk of kidney damage for small gains in cardiovascular health. Although the absolute risk of kidney damage with these drugs is low, our findings put into question the common approach of using higher doses to push cholesterol levels lower and lower.

Researchers from Dr Dormuths University of British Columbia and the Lady Davis Institute at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal studied more than two million statin users.

They found that patients taking higher strength pills were more at risk of suffering acute kidney injury.

They were at a 34 per cent greater danger of being hospitalised with kidney problems within 120 days of starting treatment with high-dose statins than low-dose pills.

About one in 500 patients were hospitalised for acute kidney injury within a period of up to two years the length of the study after starting a lower strength statin, according to study published on bmj.com.

Acute kidney injury, or acute renal failure, is the term used when the kidneys cannot remove salt, water and waste products from the blood.

Dr Pierre Ernst, professor of medicine at the McGill University Centre for Clinical Epidemiology in Montreal, who was involved in the research, said: We are not saying dont take statins.

If you are giving patients a high dose statin, lets make sure there is a good reason. A high dose might be beneficial for those who have had a heart attack or have high cholesterol, and then they are life-saving.

But for the 40-year-old woman who exercises, doesnt have high blood pressure and only slightly raised cholesterol, there is no need to put her on a high dose.

Prof Peter Weissberg, British Heart Foundation medical director, said: Most people in the UK are on low doses of statins. Further research is needed to establish whether it is the statins or the underlying blood vessel disease in people taking high doses that causes kidney problems.

Statins considered to be high potency were rosuvastatin at doses of 10mg or higher, atorvastatin at doses of 20mg or higher, and simvastatin at doses of 40mg or more.

All other statins were considered low potency. Simvastatin is the most frequently prescribed statin in the UK. Statins are extremely effective at reducing the fatty substance which clogs arteries, triggering heart attack or stroke. More than eight million Britons take statins and heart experts say that if five million more took them it would cut heart attacks and stroke by 10,000 a year, saving 2,000 lives.

Others warn that not enough is known about the side-effects

This wonder drug started out called NYSTATIN. "newyorkstate" and was made for a water born bug in new york, when no one wanted them they invented bad cholesterol and peddled them to doctors, look it up you will be amazed what the pharmie industry is doing to keep you ill, yes i said ill because they do not want you to get well as you would not be taking their pills anymore would you, its a con.
Anyone who has researched bad cholesterol will know that your body needs it, look it up, do not trust doctors today, they do medicine from a computer now, so can you.

There is a book by a Dr F, Batmanghelidj called" your not ill your thirsty" and another called" your bodies many cries for water", you will not see it often nor mentioned because he explains that the Pharmie companies do not want you to know that 8 glasses of plain water per day and a little sea salt, yes salt, not tea, not coffee, not coke but plain water and a bit of salt cures you of the majority of illnesses suffered by people today and why, read it and you will see it makes sense.
My type 2 diabetes is now down to normal, without drugs and i wouldnt take statins if you paid me after reading where they came from and what they can do to you.
Illness is big business health is not and as long as you are kept going but not healthy you are a cash cow to the pharmieindustry, like a smoker your hooked.

Statins are a dangerous drug. Three times my doc has got me to take them and on each occasion I have got severe muscle effects in the legs and not been able to walk. The pain was terrible. I now refuse all statins type medications. I know people who have been hospitalized after taking statins and of course if they kill you the cause cannot be identified.
Its just mega bucks for the drug companies who have compiled all the research saying how wonderful they are.
Indeed,just a big con.

Resistance to antibiotics now kills more people than AIDS

Leah Zerbe at Rodale reports on the dangerous side effects of doctors over prescribing antibiotics and their use in factory farming:

The World Health Organization recently said resistance to antibiotics might be the end of modern medicine; people could die after routine operations or when a simple scrape on the knee becomes infected.
In fact, we're already seeing all sorts of antibiotic-resistant infections claim lives and strain the healthcare system. The most common, MRSA, alone kills about 18,000 people a year in the United Statesthat's more than AIDS. Gonorrhea is also on the verge of being untreatable, and many common antibiotics no longer cure urinary tract infections.

Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) has reintroduced to Congress the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act, which aims to reduce the use of human antibiotics in animals. It is estimated that 80% of the antibiotics used in the US go to animal agriculture.

Basically, factory farms are unsanitary, so the animals may get sick unless they are pumped full of antibiotics. This legislation would not only help keep antibiotics working better for humans, but would also encourage factory farmers to create more sanitary conditions for the animals
